Rommelsbacher EKM 400 – Coffee Mill with Conical Burr Grinder

The Rommelsbacher EKM 400 is an electric coffee mill with a stainless steel conical burr grinder, designed for grinding whole, roasted coffee and espresso beans. It covers the full range from extra-fine espresso grinds to coarse French press, with 35 individually selectable grind settings. The mill doses automatically from 1 to 12 portions in coffee mode and 1 to 2 portions in espresso mode, with electronic fine-tuning of the portion size in 10 steps per setting, so the output matches the exact amount needed for a given brew method and personal taste.

The grinder uses a conical burr mechanism rather than flat blades, which is the more flavour-preserving approach to grinding beans. An anti-block system protects the burrs, and electronic overload protection (error code E2) automatically stops the motor if a foreign object, such as a small stone, jams the mechanism. The grinding plunger is removable for easy cleaning and clearing blockages.

A notable feature is the integrated antistatic function. An ion generator ionises the air in the powder outlet channel, reducing static charge so ground coffee does not cling to the container, outlet channel, or measuring spoon. For anyone who has dealt with fine espresso grounds scattering across the countertop, this addresses a real and common frustration.

The EKM 400 operates via touch control sensors with a large LED display. The display shows the selected number of portions and the fine-adjustment level simultaneously. Two operating modes are available: a coffee mode (indicated by a coffee bean icon) optimised for medium grind output across 1–12 portions, and an espresso mode (indicated by a portafilter icon) optimised for fine grind output across 1–2 portions. The appliance remembers the last-used setting, so repeated daily use requires no reconfiguration. After 2 minutes of inactivity, the mill switches to an energy-saving standby mode (< 0.5 W consumption).

The removable portafilter holder fits portafilters with a diameter of approximately 60 mm, allowing ground coffee to be dispensed directly into the portafilter of an espresso machine. This makes the EKM 400 a practical companion for portafilter machine users who want freshly ground coffee dosed directly into their basket without an intermediate container.

The beans container holds up to 220 g (depending on bean type) and features a transparent body with a flavour-protecting lid and an automatic locking mechanism that prevents beans from falling out when the container is removed. The powder container holds up to 130 g (depending on bean type and grind setting) and includes a lid with a silicone closure for aroma protection. A silicone seal on the powder outlet channel ensures no grounds are lost during grinding.

The grinder is modular: the conical burr assembly and grinding plunger can be removed without tools for thorough cleaning. A cleaning brush and measuring spoon are included, both stored in the lid of the beans container. The base unit has 5 non-slip rubber feet for stable placement and a cord take-up on the underside.

The EKM 400 is designed for household and similar environments, including staff kitchens in offices and small commercial settings, agricultural holdings, and guest use in hotels and bed-and-breakfast accommodations. It is not designed for commercial use. Maximum continuous operating time is 3 minutes, after which the motor requires at least 10 minutes to cool down (error code E1 indicates overheating protection has activated). The mill is intended exclusively for whole, roasted coffee beans, not for poppy seeds, rice, nuts, sugar, or pre-ground powder.
