Rommelsbacher CTA 1800/IN — Mobile Induction Cooking Plate with Selectable Power Limitation

The CTA 1800/IN is a round, single-zone induction cooking plate built for flexible use across very different settings. At 1.75 kg and with dimensions of 30.5 x 27 x 6.5 cm, it is compact enough for a kitchen drawer, a camper van locker, or a garden shed, and it comes with a textile carry bag to make moving it around practical. The distinguishing feature is the built-in POWER switch: a three-position selector that caps the maximum current draw at 4A, 6A, or 10A. This makes it genuinely suited to off-grid power sources such as photovoltaic systems, mobile power stations, and campsite hook-ups, not only standard household sockets.

Designed for household and similar environments, it also covers staff kitchens in shops and offices, agricultural holdings, and accommodation settings such as hotels and bed and breakfasts. It is not intended for commercial use.

The POWER switch is the feature that most buyers will want to understand before purchasing. It limits the maximum current the appliance draws from the available supply in three steps: 4A for up to 800 W, suitable for photovoltaic systems, emergency generators, and mobile storage units; 6A for up to 1250 W, for campsite hook-ups and motorhome inverters; and 10A for the full 1800 W, for standard household mains and shore power. The selected setting can be stored as a permanent default by holding the Set sensor for approximately three seconds. Even after unplugging the unit, it restores the saved setting on next switch-on.

Within whichever power limit is active, nine cooking levels are available via touch sensors. The LED display shows the current level, and holding the + or – sensor scrolls through levels quickly. At the 10A setting, levels run from approximately 80 W (level 1) to 1800 W (level 9). At 6A the range is 80 W to 1250 W; at 4A, 80 W to 800 W.

Operation is quiet, achieved through an optimized fan-speed control system that cools internal components. After extended use, the fan may continue running briefly while the unit is in standby, which is normal.

The safety feature set covers pot recognition, which automatically interrupts heating if cookware is removed from the zone without switching off; a residual heat indicator that displays H when the glass surface is above 60 °C and L below that threshold; overheating protection; non-slip silicone feet; and an operating time limit that switches the unit to standby automatically if no settings are adjusted for two hours. If no cooking is started within 60 seconds of switch-on, the unit also returns to standby.

Because the glass ceramic surface is not directly heated, food residues and spillovers cannot burn onto it. Cleaning requires only a damp cloth; a glass scraper can be used for coarser residue.

Important Compatibility Information

The CTA 1800/IN requires induction-compatible cookware with a ferromagnetic base. Compatible materials include cast iron, wrought iron, enamelled steel, and stainless steel with a sufficiently high iron content. Capsule bases (aluminium and stainless steel combined) also work but should not be used at full power, as the comparatively small amount of magnetisable material means they reach their energy limit more quickly.

Cookware base diameter must be between 120 mm and 200 mm. Note that thin stainless steel bases at the lower end of this range can trigger a safety shutdown at high power levels; this reflects the cookware's material properties rather than a fault in the unit. Reducing the power limit setting to 4A lowers energy density and often resolves compatibility issues that occur at higher settings.

Do not use the appliance on ferromagnetic surfaces such as stainless steel worktops, as these can become very hot during operation.
